When I travel in Europe, I use pre-paid phone cards and dial back to the US. They can be had quite cheaply from Sam's Club and Costco. You would have to check to see what their current rates are from various countries, but in the past I have been getting around $.25 a minute. For simply checking email this may do the trick. The biggest drawbacks are that speed is not great this way (~28,000 or less in my experience) and setting it up to dial all of the card numbers and wait at the right time is not trivial.
You might also check with AT&T. A few years ago, they offered European access plans. I suspect they still do. The nice part is that for many countries there was only one number to dial for all cities, which was very convenient. I don't know if they can hook you up for less than a year or not.
