I would suspect that the administrative or Root password had been
compromised.  A malware program could have been installed.  A trojan could
have been downloaded via email.  The possiblities are endless on 'how' the
program got installed and by whom.  Ensure that your operating system has
all security patches installed, boarder routers are inplace with appropriate
security settings, administrative passwords are never used remotely even if
you believe that pp2p, 3des, or any other pipe encryption really keeps you
secure.

As posting late .. if you could advise the o/s that you are using I might be
able to provide you some additional pointers.  You might want to ensure, if
you are talking about stat.com, that your IMail server has good active virus
scanning software and also that you close your telnet port access from the
outside (wan).
