We are using Imail 7.x. We configured outlook express to send and receive mails for user 'admin'. We configured our domain as 'demo.com'. From outlook express, we can send a message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
As part of our testing, we tried to send a message to the address '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', and surprisingly the message has been sent and received successfully.
Could anyone help us by explaining this phenomenon.
You would need to read the RFCs *very* carefully to figure how a mailserver is supposed to handle that. And it is quite likely that there could be a difference of opinion as to how it should be handled.
My guess is that the "%" turns it into "the user named 'admin@' at the local server", so IMail then sees "admin@", which it turns into just "admin".
Is '%' supposed to work as a wild card or is it a bug in IMail.
It's not supposed to be used as a wildcard, but was used as an old routing mechanism. For example, if you send mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", the E-mail would go to the @example.com mailserver, which would then send the E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (if it allows for relaying, or the example.net domain is local).
If this is a feature provided by Imail, is there a way to block it.
It should only be an issue in unusual circumstances (such as if IMail is acting as a backup for a mailserver that allows the IMail server to relay through it). However, if you have a need to block it, Declude JunkMail will block such E-mail by default. You may also be able to use some type of IMail rule to do this (you would just need to test to make sure that it would go through the rules whether it was a local E-mail "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" or a remote E-mail "[EMAIL PROTECTED]").
