Your objective is to approve messages without changing the From:
address, and the only way to do that is with a password. The follow-on
objective is to conceal the password-protected nature of the list from
the subscribers, so that mail can continue to be sent by subscribers
without special modification on their end.
What I'd suggest is:
- Create your list as password-protected, subscribers only can post
- Delete the auto-created program alias ('listname') and create a new
program alias ('listname-moderated') in its place with exactly the
same target
- Create a user alias that points to your moderator's e-mail address,
but has the name of the list ('listname')
Then, when mail comes in:
- POP the mail from the moderator's account with a mail client that
can do redirection (The Bat!, Opera 7, perhaps others)
- Redirect the approved mail to 'listname-moderated' and put the
password in the Subject line using the usual '[:password:]' format
There doubtless are other ways to do this, but this will work and is a
one-time setup. Note that a more complex setup would block
non-subscribers at the initial reception of the e-mail (rather than
after resubmission), but I didn't want to get into that unless you
need it.
