I've also noticed that this happens when integrated with NT/AD. I believe this has to do with the parsing routine that Ipswitch uses to get the names from the user DB. This has frustrated us as well because Ipswitch is forcing us to use the "Display Name" attribute in AD in a specific name order.
On occasion I've noticed interesting things like nested self-referencing loops (use a regular LDAP 1/2 command line tool to take a look).
