Thanks for the info. I've continued digging through the list archives and am now wondering if this is related to our Cisco Firewall configuration. Does anyone know if the smtp fix command is enabled by default? We don't do IP inspection per se but we do enable smtp through an access list. Would this use the smtp fixup that is causing the problem?

  Check the logs to see if the clients are trying to authenticate and
  why they are failing.

  The only reason for something like this I recall is having the
  server set to not announce smtp-auth.  In that case a number of
  clients will not attempt to authenticate.  So be certain to have the
  server announcing smtp-auth.
