Actually it is a great idea to run some basic IDS and firewall host based software on your boxes. You also need a packet filtering appliance and an IDS solution monitoring various points on the network. This is called defense in depth. It is a bad idea to rely on one single point as your security solution. Consider this. Security is a strong tall pillar... That you can always go around.

You can purchase a small Sonicwall or ServGate box for under $500, I think the SG100 is about $300. If you have to get really cheap you can use a Linksys for less than $50, but I wouldn't recommend it.
