I did not receive one answer to this question.

Let me try. :)

FWIW, there are a number of different types of names.

[1] The DNS name of the mailserver, which is almost always in the form "mail.example.com". This is the address that appears in MX records. It *could* be just "example.com" (which is not recommended, as most people have "example.com" point to their webserver), and any other name is acceptable (such as "mailhost.example.com", "imail.example.com" or even "sparky.example.com").

[2] The domains that accept mail. My personal recommendation here is to *only* allow E-mail to @example.com (not to @hostname.example.com, etc.). Once you allow E-mail to @hostname.example.com, you're stuck accepting mail to that domain forever. However, most people add "mail.example.com" to IMail (I'm guessing the instructions recommend it).

[3] The internal networking name of the IMail server. This may be "mail.example.com", but is often something completely unrelated to the DNS name, such as "sparky.example.com". Best practice would probably be to have something other than "mail.example.com" as the networking name (and have both registered in DNS).

[4] The Official Host Name of the IMail server ("Host Name" on the General tab of IMail Administrator, when "localhost" is highlighted on the left side of the screen). This is usually either "example.com" or "mail.example.com". It is recommended that this be either "example.com" or "mail.example.com" (although quite a few people have it set to something like "sparky.example.com").

[5] The "Official" names of domains. These are the "proper" names of the domains (if you have one choice as to what domain E-mail should be sent to, it should be this one). This should be "example.com", with "mail.example.com" as a host alias. However:

IMail makes little distinction in references to #4 and #5. One or both must be set to "example.com" in order to have web messaging return addresses default to "@example.com". One or both must be set to "mail.example.com" for the mailserver to properly identify itself (in HELO/EHLO and the SMTP greeting). One or both must be set to "mail.example.com" in order for web messaging to link properly back to itself. It's because of this confusion that so many IMail users accept mail to @mail.example.com.
