im wondering how the moderator might be able to easily subscribe and unsubscribe
a number of addresses by simply sending an email to the list

List admin commands send via email is a great feature, but Imail doesn't have it.

Write yourself a small .bat file and run it as an program alias that appends new users. sort + uniq it to remove duplicates. Send a msg to the list that contains the list of users to un/sub in the msg body.

If that's too fancy, just remote control the Imail box and paste in your additions to the txt file that holds the user list. Bulk delete is trickier.

 and without having to
logon and perform each subscribe / unsubscribe manually ??? I know this was
possible with majordomo list software

Imail list server is basic, as you have seen. If you have list admin tasks it can't handle to your liking and you don't want to add-on 3rd party stuff and/or write your own add-ons, then use a full-featured list server. There are several open-source MLMs, such Ecartis, Mailman, Majordomo, etc. Ecartis has rich and secure email command language that can do bulk un/subs. It also has bounce management and tons of params to play with.
