I am getting ready to install my first IMail server. I will have a primary and a backup server using two new DL320's (P4-2.26GHz) with RAID-1 80GB drives and 1� GB RAM each. They will be behind a Netscreen firewall, and only used for internet domains. They will see very light usage to begin with -- only 3 or 4 domains with a total of maybe 150-200 users, and relatively low mail volume.
I purchased two copies of IMail Small Business per this article: http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19990513-EM01.htm although it sounds from some of the messages on this list as though I maybe didn't need two copies. (IpSwitch said I did.) I also purchased the IMail 250-user AV, but now wishing I had opted for the Declude version. Oh well, live and learn. Anyhow, I have some basic configuration questions that I couldn't find addressed in the list archives. 1. I have a choice of Win2K and Server 2003. Any opinions on which route to go, cost aside? 2. Are there any guidelines for configuring the server itself? I'm interested in having minimal services running since these will be dedicated servers. 3. Can I use MSDE for the user database? That would make it easy for me to add new mailboxes from my ASP and ASP.NET apps, which all use MS SQL Server. 4. Does it make any difference which of the domains I select as the primary domain for naming the server? 5. Is there any point to creating multiple partitions in this configuration? I don't see a performance benefit with mirrored drives, like there would be with separate drives. 6. Related to #5, with a backup server in place, would it be better to not mirror the drives and put the messages onto their own drive? Thanks for any and all feedback!
