Okay, so *not* ODBC.

Yes,  it  is.  I wonder if, in fact, the idea of exposing the password
for  IMail databases only just never got implemented, and the function
was left in the standard (dummied-up) form by accident.

I  doubt  it. There doesn't appear to be such an option, and the IMail
DLLs know full well what kind of db is used by each virtual host.
