Almost certainly. There was a known bug throughout a number of versions of IMail that would cause it to use the A record if the MX record(s) did exist, but none of the mailserver(s) in the MX record(s) could be reached. If you upgrade to the latest version of IMail, you will not have this problem.
Why would this only occur with one domain name in the whole internet world. Other domains on this server can send to the same
client.
Probably because that domain is broken, and their primary mailserver intentionally isn't reachable. Although SMTP is designed to work with problems like this, very few people will attempt something as silly as that.
