I am trying to figure out capacity for List Deliveries on a T-1 line. I have questions about data formulas, and capacity of IMail as a List Server:
1). Data transfer formula A T-1 line is 1.54 megabits per second. Right? And a Gigabyte is equal to 8,589,934,592 bits. Right? If this is true, a Gigabyte of data should pass through a T-1 connection in approximately 5,578 seconds (or 93 minutes). I imagine there is some "slop" either way. But is this close? 2). Data needed formula Assume there are 300 subscribers on a list. If one user sends one 10K message to the list, that would consume 3MB, right (10,000 x 300)? So 50 messages sent every day, for 30 days, would be the rough equivalent of 4.5GB of data in a month's time. Is this correct? And that works out to approximately 7.5 hours of T-1 line use, right? Which means approximately 90 lists like this would saturate a T-1 line in a month. Right? 3). I believe there was a thread, some time back, about using IMail as a List Server. Someone commented that Listserv should be used for heavy-duty listing. I checked with LSoft and their product would be about $18,000 the first year (and around $6,000 in subsequent years). I have a bunch of smaller lists (300 members or so) for non-profits and $18,000, even divided among 10 groups, is cost prohibitive. But, if IMail can't handle it, then I guess we will just continue to do without. 4). Bcc and ISP grouping I have read that it is faster to setup a group at a domain and deliver them all at once to that group? Is this true or not? I guess I don't understand how groups work. It seems like it would have to deliver the same amount of messages, to the same amount of people, regardless of whether or not it is 10 individuals or 10 individuals in a group. Is there a resource (especially an online resource) that explains this so I may understand it better? Thanks in advance.
