We are an ISP, I don't think that AD would be a very good option for our
userbase?  Hrmm...so the Imail userbase isn't accessible via LDAP at all?

You  can't  authenticate  to  ILDAP.  Better bet is to use AD for your
userbase  (with  IMail NT/AD integrated auth) and then also point your
gateway to an AD DC, which is always accessible over LDAP.
