>From what I read you use internal Imail DB.

Here is what I would do. Actually I have done it a couple of times to
migrate to new servers. I use a Spool and Forward Box to make sure my users
don't lost emails while migrating. It has worked great. I usually write down
steps before starting to make sure I don't miss anything. But usually in the
run you forget one or two things.. you can easily fix that up... but
unfortunately I haven't kept those papers after job is done.

Here are my suggestions.

Install 8.04 in your new Box.. install all SP, patches, fixes from
Windows...

Backup your registry (the Imail part of course). Write down the IP numbers
of the new machine... if it is going to have the same IP numbers as your old
one, it should be easier.

If you can connect to the internet without interfering with your old imail
box, setup a test domain to make sure everything works fine. WebMessaging,
IMAP, POP3, SMTP, antivirus, etc,etc,etc... I assume you know how MX works
in order to configure the new domain to point to your new Imail Box.

Once everything is working just fine. You can follow these steps.

1. setup a spool and forward Imail box in order to keep getting mails from
your clients while you migrate everything to your new server. Depending on
how large are the files your are transferring and how fast you can transfer
them it can take from 10 minutes -it is just a guess- to a few hours if you
are connecting servers remotely over the internet. Having a Spool and
Forward Imail box makes sure emails to your clients will be received while
you setup your new Imail box. If you don't know much about spool and forward
you can either bypass this step or start reading about it and setting up one
to make sure it works and then use during migration. Make sure to setup a
MX20 to the spool and forward Imail Box for all domains before you start
migrating

2. If you setup a spool and forward server, receive your email but forward
it to an invalid Imail server while migrating (use a fake IPs in the hosts
file).. that way you receive all the email from your users but it won't be
delivered to the new IMAIL box until you decide it is time to do so. Also
change your settings in that box to try to delivered email for at least 3
days, before bounce it to the original sender

2. stop all services in your old Imail Box. Stop all services in your new
box. Change primary MX to point to your new Imail Box. Copy Imail folder
(just the domains) to your new Imail box an Imail folder location. Export
registry and import it in your new box. Make sure your IP configuration for
domains is appropriate for your new Box. That is very, very important.

3. Double make sure to change MX to point to your new Box if it is necessary
to make the change. You only have to do that if your new Imail Box has a new
IP.... also disconnect old box.. just to make sure... jejeje.

4. Turn on all services from new box... everything should work normally.

5. In your Spool and Forward box go to the hosts file and change the fake IP
with the real one from your new Imail Box. Restart services... all email
received by your users while migrating data, will be forwarded to your new
Imail Box.

You can then delete your MX20 from all domains, and when the Spool and
Forward Box stopped receiving email.. you can uninstall Imail from that Box.

Subject: [IMail Forum] upgrade advise

I am upgrading from IMAIL 6.06 to 8.04

I want to do a clean install on a new windows 2K server with a clean copy of
IMAIL. Any thoughts on the best way to migrate users and domains to the new
machine.

I have approx 100 domains and approx 10-30 users per domain. My concern is
the mail sitting on the hard drives.

I think once before I exported the registry settings and imported in the new
machine and adding the hard drives to the new server. Of course then I get
any hacks / virus/ etc

Thanks...Tim
