Sounds like I/O. Do you have SCSI or IDE.
Do you have one or two drives? Are they mirrored, striped, etc..?
If you have two drives, are both your drives on the same controller? 

If so, you may want to run out and grab an identical secondary IDE/SCSI
controller and put the other drive on it. That will give the entire
system a boost.
