If you're saying that you can't resolve mail.example.com to the proper
IP,  either  internally  or  externally,  this is an 'OT' post--it has
nothing to do with IMail.

Who  hosts  the  nameservers for your domain? What nameservers do your
internal workstations use for DNS resolution (in your Windows config)?

If  you  want  workstations  to  automatically  switch between private
addresses  when  on your private LAN, and public addresses when on the
road, you will need to have at least two different sets of DNS servers
available (the public one, of course, can be provided by the ISPs your
users  use  on the road). Hopefully, you are using DHCP internally, so
you can do the private part painlessly using DHCP.
