It's Friday morning and I'm recovering from Holiday drinking, so I apologize
if I ramble..  If it works through the IP but not the DNS, then I think
there is something screwy with the DNS and chances are the request you're
sending to the SMTP server is not going to the right server.  Check your
DNS, MX records, Aliases, etc...  Look for two or more different IP's
assigned to the same domain name.  If you find something along those lines,
remove the IP that is not your SMTP server, flush the dns cache on the
machine with outlook express to test, and that just might fix it.

I wrote it off as one of Outlook Express's quirks. (You get what you pay
for.) I don't have any explanation for it. Maybe somebody else can help with
why it happens and how to cure it.
