We have also experienced this problem and have reverted back to the previous version until it can be addressed.

Logged in remotely, started Imail admin and sure enough - the SMTP service was stopped. This happened to me a week ago as well. Seems to be since I upgraded to 8.05. Previously I've never had anything go wrong with prior versions. I was just curious if anyone else was experiencing similar problems? All the other services, POP/Queue manager are running fine, and I'm not running monitoring,ldap,imap,finger,whois at all.
