Our IMail server is a DEL 1650 1U rack-mount server with 1.5 GB of RAM,
and a 3 disk RAID 5 array of 18 GB drives. We're running IMail Server 8.05
I rarely see CPU usage over 20%, usually it's between 5 and 15%.
RAM usage is typically near 500MB, and rarely over 600MB.
There is ~12 GB free on the RAID array. The RAID array is configured
as a single RAID 5 volume. We were running an evaluation copy of Diskeeper
on the server because we noticed a high degree of fragmentation.
http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest shows between 5.0 and 3.7 megabits
per second.
IMail is configured to use an external database (done before I got my
hands on the machine.)
Users (our alumni) rate the performance of the Web interface as
"unacceptable". Login time is around 20 seconds when performance is 'good',
opening up a mailbox with 77 messages in it just took 1 minute 20 seconds.
The IMAP interface is fairly slow -- especially when compared to our
main campus IMAP server. Deleting a single message takes 10-15 seconds.
Purging deleted items takes at least 2 minutes for less than 40-50 messages
in a mailbox of less than 200 items.
Any suggestions on what I can do to improve the performance of our
setup?

resolving conflicts before war becomes necessary. War never creates peace.
