Hi Jim,
I've mentioned a few times recently I have been using ASSP very successfully for the last few weeks to catch SPAM. I have it installed on the same box as Imail.
ASSP listens for connections from the internet on port 25 then forwards onto to Imail listening on another port (in my case 125) n.b. the Imail SMTP port is blocked from external access by a firewall.
ASSP is transparent to connecting parties, if you Telnet to port 25 on the box you see the Imail greeting. I have included below my previous post about ASSP:
I have found that the Imail Spam filter is only about 80-85% effective in my environment, possible for the reasons you've given below.
I guess that's why products such as Declude are around :)
I have been trying Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy (ASSP) Server which is an open source SMTP proxy and filters on Bayesian filters. I have had this between Imail and the rest of the world for about 2 weeks now. After the first few days as the filters got used to my e mail environment I found it very effective, I would say it is now finding 99% of Spam. I am getting a few false positives at the moment so I am still allowing mail through to my users but with a prepended message on the subject line. The user can then just forward the mail back to ASSP to a specific address (automated) to report it as either NOT SPAM or SPAM as required.
I realised I forgot to include a web address last time so here it is: http://assp.sourceforge.net
One more thing, it's open source so although donations are I'm sure appreciated you don't have to spend more $$ or in my case :)
Cheers,
Adrian

Yes. It just frustrates me that I upgraded to v8 specifically for the
anti-spam features. And now I have to drop more $$ on additional
software. In hindsight I should have stuck with v7 and spent the $$
on Declude. :|
