Thanks to all who responded to my request for work-arounds to installing the 8.04/8.05 patches, where they demanded 5MB of free disk space on a drive which had 14GB free.
A helpful technician from IpSwitch asked me to provide him with screenshots of the error message, so while I was complying by running the patch and taking screen dumps along the way - the patch installed okay! The only thing I can think of which might be different this time from the several times I had tried to install it earlier, was this time I didn't stop the IMail services first - since I didn't think the patch would actually install! Both previously and now I was logged in at the console as Administrator. Go figure? P.S. Oh, and installing the patches didn't help a bit with the molasses slow web messaging...
