Hey all. What do you guys see out there that most companies use to process
SMTP traffic at the front-end?

Is it mostly UNIX-based solutions or Linux-based? Are Windows-based
solutions popular too?

I have been to quite a few large environments and never really had a problem
with Windows-based stuff. Last place had three Windows boxes with
SurfControl, we had 7,000 users, and didn't have much trouble with the SMTP
traffic. I have also used MimeSweeper and Tumbleweed in very large
environments in the past without big problems.

At this place (2,000 users), we currently have a couple of Solaris boxes
that are running Exim and SpamAssassin and they seem to not be able to cope
with the task. The boxes are Sun servers with nice CPUs and memory. They run
out of CPU resources (one or more SpamAssassin threads just hog the CPU and
eventually bog down the servers). Also the guys in charge of these boxes are
pretty bright too.

The managers want to maybe explore other options.
