-------------START------------- Packard Transport, Inc. Network / Internet Acceptable Use Policy Internet - Terms and Conditions PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE CLICKING OK. 1. Acceptable Use - The purpose of accessing the Internet is to support Packard Transport business. All use of the Internet must be in support of Packard Transport business. 2. Privileges - Each staff member accessing the Internet will be trained on the proper uses of the Internet. Use of the Internet is a privilege and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. 3. Netiquette - staff members accessing the Internet will follow the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Be polite. b. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities, or any other inappropriate language. c. Remember that illegal activities are strictly forbidden. d. Do not reveal your personal address or phone number or the personal addresses or phone numbers of others. e. Note that electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system have access to and read all mail. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities will be reported to the authorities. 4. Security- Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem, you must notify your MIS department. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Attempts to access the Internet without permission will result in cancellation of user privileges. Any user identified as a security risk or as having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to the computer network or Internet. I understand and will abide by the Internet Terms and Conditions. I understand that any violation of the regulations is unethical and may constitute a criminal offense. If I commit any violation, my access privileges may be revoked disciplinary action and/or appropriate legal action may be taken. These procedures shall apply to all users of telecommunications systems which are entered via equipment and access lines located in Packard Transport or to all users who obtain their access privileges through association with the Agent Access. Purpose The purpose of these procedures is to ensure compliance with procedures and guidelines concerning all telecommunication activities, specifically Internet, which may be generated at local, state, national and international levels. Training and Compliance all staff will be trained in and will comply with all policies and guidelines adopted by Packard Transport for the accessing of telecommunications. All such users will be trained in "Netiquette", electronic communication ethics, and user responsibilities. Copyrighted material In order to protect intellectual property rights and the continued availability of network access, computer software which is protected under the copyright laws will not be transmitted via the network or stored on any computers without the express written permission of the copyright owner. Consequences of Inappropriate Network Behavior Repeated or severe infractions of the procedures and guidelines may result in termination of access privileges. Unauthorized use of the network, intentional deletion or damage to files and data belonging to other users, or copyright ~violations may be termed theft. Internet - Acceptable Use The purpose of accessing the Internet is to support Packard Transport. Specific guidelines shall be as follows: 1. All use of the Internet must be in support of Packard Transport business. 2. Use of other organization's network or computing resources must comply with the rules appropriate for that network. 3. Transmission of any material in violation of any federal or state regulation is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to transmission of copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, or material protected by trade secret. 4. Use of the network for commercial or for-profit purposes is prohibited. 5. Use of the network for personal and private business is prohibited. 6. Use of the network for product advertisement or political lobbying is prohibited. 7. Network accounts are to be used only by the authorized owner of the account for the authorized purpose. 8. Users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other users, or misrepresent other users on the network. 9. All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property of Packard Transport, Inc. 10. No use of the network shall serve to disrupt the use of the network by others; hardware or software shall not be destroyed, modified, or abused in any way. 11. Malicious use of the network such as developing programs that harass other users, infiltrating a computer or computing system, or damaging the software components of a computer or computing system is prohibited. 12. Hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks, and other antisocial behaviors are prohibited on the network. 13. The illegal installation of copyrighted software for use on district computers is prohibited. 14. Use of the network to access or process pornographic material, inappropriate text files, or files dangerous to the integrity of the local area network is prohibited. 15. Packard Transport maintains the right to determine whether specific uses of the network are consistent with acceptable practices. 16. Personal information regarding users may not be provided across the Internet (e.g., last name, pictures, address, or telephone numbers). You have the opportunity to access the Internet, an international telecommunications network, picking up information from corporations, government institutions, private individuals, and universities. The Internet is said to be the communication and information highway of tomorrow. Through the Internet you may communicate with others in cities, states, or countries and may have access to hundreds of databases, libraries, and computer services from all over the world. The Internet is an association of over 1,000,000 computer networks in more than 70 countries. It is important for you to be aware that the Internet not only provides opportunities but also contains areas of adult content or other material which maybe objectionable. While Packard Transport will make every effort to prevent access to such material, it is impossible to ensure that this material will not be accessed. With this opportunity also comes responsibility. It is important that you read and discuss the enclosed information. It is also important for you to abide by the conditions addressed in the enclosures. Punishment to Host Admin Hello Forum: Here is a question for anyone who might know about email and laws. I host email for 12 school districts here in Michigan. One of the Host Administrators, without a request, forwarded email from a teachers account to the Personnel Director for that district. This was done illegally and now the teachers union wants to press charges against the Admin. It was proven that the admin changed the forwarding on this teachers account. The changes were made over the Web and were logged in the W2xxxxxx.log. Using one IP address from a local cable ISP, the admin signed in as the teacher..looking in her preferences, inbox, and then ultimately changing the forward and then logging out. A couple of seconds later...still on the same IP, the admin logged in as themselves, checked mail and logged out. One IP logging in as two different accounts. The school district reprimanded and I believe fired the admin. However, the teacher and her union want to know if they can do anything? Can the teacher press charges? Can anyone lead me to an article or something to help with this? Thanks forum, I don't know who else to ask.
