My SMTP relay settings are set to 'No mail relay'.

After rebooting the machine I can do a:

Telnet imailserver.caltech.edu 25
HELO
MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
RCPT TO: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

------------

<got this script from the IPSwitch database searching for 550 unknown user.>

And all is fine.  Prior to the reboot I was getting the 550 unknown user
error after the last line.

550 is relay not allowed.  Check your relay settings.

     Occasionally my server starts sending back '550 unknown user' when the
users exist.  I believe that it returns this for all users on the system.  

     The most expedient way to fix the problem has been to reboot.  However,
sending back a 550 unknown user for users that exist is *very* bad!  I'd
like to figure out how to stop getting this message in the first place.  Any
clues?
