Our old mail server was set up exactly as you described. Our mail records resolved to the firewall and the firewall had rules set to forward smtp traffic to the mail server on the internal network which had an internal IP address.
If I understand correctly, I will set my Imail server with an internal IP address and place it behind the firewall.
I will then edit my firewall's setting so that all the IMAIL ports I need have incoming and outgoing rules applied.
I will edit my DNS records so that the MX records will point to a primary host which has the IP address of the router. The router will then forward all the requests.
