Yes, but it will be recreated automatically at next access.

Speed  depends  on the mailbox size and concurrent disk and CPU use by
other processes.

I  believe  that the CONVERT.EXE utility will do this for you in bulk,
but  you  might be better off just waiting for normal messages to come
in  and trigger the reindex. Your usage patterns will dictate the best
course of action.
