I'm troubleshooting mail delivery to a particular domain. The problem is that IMail (verison 8.05/HF2) is trying to send mail to the 'A' record, instead of the 'MX' record.
What is the domain? IMail should send to the A record if there is no MX record (even if you see one, IMail may not).
The domain is etsjobs.com. At DNSStuff.com, I looked them up and there is both an MX and an A record for 'etsjobs.com', although they point to different IP addresses. I looked at the IMail log, and found that IMail was connecting to the Ip of the A record. At the IMail server, I did IPCONFIG/ FLUSHDNS, which seems to have cured the problem -- a test after that showed IMail pointing to the right place. Perhaps the receiving domain reconfigured some stuff and the DNS changes hadn't made their way to my server.
While investigating, I noticed that the destination domain's MX record has a preference setting of zero (0). Is that legal and/or advisable?
Yes, an MX with a preference is legal. I'm not aware of any problems using a preference on 0.
I was just wondering, as I've never seen 0 used before.
