You've got a choice.
[1] Use the Test Virus Sender at http://www.declude.com/tools and know with certainty that you are set up properly (the eicarencodedzip and eicardynamicencodedzip files must get caught; if not, you are not properly protected). This is backed by a company that has been selling AV software for years, or
[2] Have someone send you a dangerous file, that could potentially spread a virus, could potentially get them in legal trouble, etc. Doing this lets you know that any further exact copies of the dangerous file sent from that person should get caught, but does not give you any other reliable information.
There is a very good reason why AV companies have a policy of not giving out live viruses, and why AV companies have a policy of telling people to use the eicar.com test file. Doing otherwise is dangerous.
