I  would  never  try  to  push that traffic through a single, uncached
drive.

Take  constant  contention  for the disk channel from multiple daemons
and  threads,  add  in fragmentation, and you've got a recipe for high
CPU.  It's  not only distinctly processor-intensive apps that can suck
up CPU; many disk-intensive apps can do the same.

I  would  move  to  a  RAID  1  array  at  the very least, RAID 0+1 if
possible,  with  as  many drive spindles dedicated to as many separate
functions. The archives are rife with exemplary RAID configurations.
