We originally set up a single machine -- dual processor, 1GB RAM, to run both MS SQL Server and IMAIL. Because we were very small, this configuration worked very very well -- EXTREMELY WELL -- for a very long time. There was some initial fine-tuning, but once that was done, it has worked great ever since. (So don't flame me for having a non-recommended configuration, please!).

:)

Because this is a dual-processor machine, my immediate question is, is there any way to set up iMail so that it uses only ONE of the two processors, so that we can dedicate SQL Server to the other one? It's not "complete isolation", because they'd still be sharing memory and disk drives, but at least the contention for CPU cycles would be isolated.

I'm not aware of a way to do this with services, but if there is a way, I'm sure someone will respond. However, my first question would be whether CPU resources are an issue here -- are you really at or close to 100% CPU usage? Normally, with SQL, the resource hog is memory. Splitting up the processors will mean that if IMail or SQL is at 100% CPU usage, the rest of the CPU usage will go unused, which would be more likely to hurt than help.
