I have an Imail server which is behind a DSL router. I was wondering which DNS address to use for the SMTP config. A DNS address of the ISP or the IP address of the router which automatically gets the DNS info from the ISP?
Neither. You should run your own DNS server. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of your Internet provider. There have been many cases where there were DNS problems caused by using an Internet provider's DNS server. It is OK to run the DNS server on the same computer that IMail is running on. This is especially important if you run anti-spam software, which can significantly increase the volume of DNS queries.
However, if you must use your Internet provider's DNS server, you should probably use the IP of the router -- it has a DNS server in there for a reason (it may be caching responses, for example, which would be beneficial).
