"it" depends on the app is. Good resolver return the complete record set to the app that queired for PTR.
This makes it very difficult when running assorted services on a single IP address where other companies expect the PTR name to be the same as the service name. The only thing that should matter is the domain name. Where as the only dilemma would be virtual domains running on one IP.
Fon non-smtp services, who knows?
But, for an IP sending SMTP to MXs, there is no problem with recommendation that one PTR be the same as the HELO hostname (no matte what the envelope sender domain is).
