Thanks for the responses - you've confirmed what I originally thought about
the timestamps. Turns out this particular situation has nothing to do with
that at all (the PC in question just needed a reboot apparently). But at
least now I'll know for the future how the timestamps work and not have to
bug you guys about such an elementary concept.

thanks again,

Scott. As far as I have seen there are 2 time stamps.
1.The one a user visible sees when he opens the message. That timestamp
reflects the time and date the sender had when he sent the message.

2.The one in the header of the message. This timestamp shows you the time
the server had at the exact moment the server received the message.

You also will see the sender timestamp in the message header, but that
timestamp is the one I explained first.

With that said, a sender could change his computer time and date settings
and send a message making the recipient believe that he sent the message the
date and time set it for the effect.

The only true way to see when the message was sent and received is by
looking at the mail relay log for the sender and the mail receiver log
-assuming that the time and date of those servers are accurate -.

The message that arrives in the users mailbox, does that display the time of
the receiving server, or of the sending server?

I have a user that around 11:30 had just received some messages with a
timestamp of somewhere around 8:30.

I've checked my logs, but I'm not sure I see anything strange in there. I
can't get to the user yet to see if I can actually look at the messages that
were received to find out any more information on them.
