And we all know how dependable Microsoft's MSN and HOTMAIL servers are, don't we?
And I don't "damn the customer" The majority of my clients are hospitals, law firms and accounting firms. They are VERY specific about how things are done. If they have an employee who travels outside of the rules, the employee is usually gone before they create any kind of problem for me. My theatre customers for whom we do custom ticket sales also appreciate the security and the fact that they never have a problem with their customer's credit cards, the ticket vouchers get delivered on-time, their databases are always correct and the servers are there selling their tickets 24/7. It's all about SECURITY, RELIABILITY and ABSOLUTE DEPENDABILITY. No music, no video, no games and no general public. You can have the customers that play with XP, ME and all of the other crap that's always causing security loopholes and problems. I'll stick with NT, W2K, and Linux, where my work and expertise is appreciated. So, in addition to our differences of opinions, it appears that we are also dealing with different customer bases. I deal far less with people like Microsoft and Cisco because I don't have the inherent problems caused by the kinds of crowds that you are dealing with. We all have different opinions/experiances on how often POP3 mail should be checked so I'll throw my experiance in there as well; When I worked for the ISP, I had a group of customers (ebay fanatics, and you dont want to tell those people they have to wait for their mail) who would check their mail every minute, and occasionaly their account would get locked, we'd go in and restart the pop3 service for them. Granted, this was using MailSite from RockCliff (sp), and restarting pop3 is not a great way to solve the problem, it did work. Our final solution when they started to get pissy about it was to move them to IMAP, this does generate more traffic, but it also creates a happier customer. ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: Stephan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 14:00:29 -0400 >I'd like to come join you on whatever planet you live on :-) I don't mean >to be disrespectful but regardless of what email was designed to do, 99% of >users we deal with expect email to be near instantaneous, it's impossible >to change that perception. > >We handle from 500,000 to upwards of 700,000 emails per day on our Imail >server and delivery usually takes under a minute, actually in most cases >it's pretty much instantaneous.
