Mine is a remote backup program backing up to an off-site location for disaster recovery and business continuity.

If it only happened 3 times, don't worry about it -- it may have been something unusual that you were doing at the time. The only two types of programs we have ever identified that lock files that they perhaps should not are on-access virus scanners and backup programs. But there are rare occasions when other programs lock the files; it is unknown what programs do this (or why).
