Joe-Jobbed is probably more likely the case, if the original messages didn't spew forth from your server, and there's not a darn thing you can do about it, really, because the networks bouncing those messages back to you aren't seeing that they are forgeries, so the spammer is effectively hijacking all of them to fire off the <> sender bounces to your users (intended targets).
In theory, SPF and/or similar forgery identification technologies would help this once widely implemented. If they had decent spam filter that might identify these things that would help too, but again, implementation on their end is the key. As Sandy will vigorously proclaim, you can't turn off NUL sender acceptance, but you might have to find something to screen them after arrival before they load up all your users' mailboxes.
