Since no one else has replied on this, I will give it a shot. Good, bad or indifferent, there are some files that MS has included in IE that are used by other programs. Primarely, I think this is the Windows Installer program files. Example, to install NAV (SAV) 7.5 or greater, you have to have at least IE 5.5 installed, as it contains the needed updated Windows Installer program files. (And I would guess that you actually need at least IE 5.5 to install, not just IE 5.0.) Now, you can try going to the MS downloads site and see if you can find the latest Windows Installer Program and install and see if that works.
