I have now sussed this problem out - if the client adds a reply to line using the list address, IMail rejects it. I use some old email software to monitor around 50 lists filtering emails into different folders for each list. It adds the reply to line to ensure that messages are returned to the relevant lists, but IMail doesn't seem to like this.
