Until 5000- 6000-- then it crapped out-- I was very surprised as it was all going so smooth

Not sure......
google for winmtr and put in your Imail box, point at an IP beyond your WAN provider, and then watch the times between Imail and the first hop other side of the WAN. also watch for lost packets
