It's perfectly viable, just slower under load.

This is a very reasonable path, since the per-user settings are stored
in  the  exact  same  place for IMail database hosts and NT-integrated
hosts  (that  is, in the Registry) and you'll need to get at that info
anyway.

Not  sure which "exposure" you're referring to--IMail needs only to be
installed  on _a_ domain controller, possibly for a segregated domain,
and  that DC need not answer any remote logon requests--but that seems
generally quite reasonable.

Also  check  my  signature  for a utility, designed specifically for a
mail  flow  such as yours, that allows you to stop mail to nonexistent
Exchange  recipients during the original (remote-to-IMail) envelope. A
great help against dictionary-based attacks.
