I get them fairly steady. Check and see if you have the nobody@ alias set up, if so, remove it. With the nobody@ alias there, your server will be forced to receive every bit of email sent to it instead of kicking back an error. You could also cut the maximum number of recipients per message on the advanced tab of the SMTP service.
Overall they don't do much to my bandwidth (a 1.544mbps T1), but when I used to run IIS SMTP as a gateway it was murder. Lastly, do a quick search in the list archive, there may be some other solutions besides what I mentioned.
