There are pros and cons on each tool. I like both but I tend to lean over the forum just when I need to look at archived messages. I usually don't keep any postings in my outlook for history.
I would be nice if you could still receive the postings in your mailbox and be able to reply from your email client, that way you would only have to subscribe to the forum once and forget about it. I agree, it's a waste of time to log in, browse messages and start typing a reply. And btw, they ought to get some nicer templates/colors!
