Well all I can say is that my filters treat inbound email that fail both the VALHELO and VALREVDNS as spam. If one of them pass then the email gets passed to the next set of inbound rule. Works well for me!
That's because it isn't what you said.
You were saying that an E-mail with a valid HELO and valid reverse DNS entry that are not the same (such as "mail.example.net" versus "mail.example.com") would get blocked. Only very bad anti-spam programs do that; IMail v8's anti-spam does not.
What you are saying here is that an E-mail with a bogus HELO *and* a bogus reverse DNS entry is almost always spam. That is quite true. But someone running IMail that has that problem will have that problem no matter whether or not they use virtual domains, and whether or not they use IMail.
This still doesn't answer my original question though.
That's because I wasn't responding to your original question. I was responding to a post stating invalid information (actually, two posts stating invalid information). I can't answer your question about why whitelisting doesn't work because I know very little about the internal operations of IMail v8's anti-spam (I don't use it). What I do know is that with earlier versions of IMail v8's anti-spam, whitelisting didn't really whitelist the E-mail, but only caused it to pass some spam tests (either all the content filtering tests or all the connection filtering tests). I believe this was corrected in IMail v8.10 or v8.12, however.
I can only assume that this is occurring because these tests are performed prior to the whitelist check, instead of after.
Actually, whitelisting can work either way (either before or after the tests are run). In this case, you may need to contact Ipswitch to find out why it was not whitelisted.
