We only use the web interface with the KillerWebMail template. I checked all the
preferences and cannot find a way to turn off read receipts, or set to prompt. Am I
missing something?

Thanks for your help.

AFAIK, Imail is not involved in a "read receipt" other than being a
delivery mechanism, only the email client sends them. So your end user
needs to turn off read receipts, or set them to prompt.

If you are convinced the email client is not sending receipts, look
for a "vacation.ima" or a "main.inf" in the user's folder on the
server to see if the vacation message or info manager is enabled.
