I would like to see what is triggering the >512 byte limit.
If you can't see it in standard SMTP logging, then turn on SMTP debug logging. If is there is no more info about it there, then you're outta luck using Imail to see it.
Since this backup MX is apparently important, turn off "Auto-deny possible hack attempt" dynamic blocking (but statically blocked) to allow the legit SMTP traffic. This will not, in theory, cause Imail to fail if the 512 limit occurs.
