I read all the posts about this from the archive before designing the array, trick is with the price of drive space today and the fastest drives being so large, it provided the least waste in a cost to performance ratio. I don't need a striped 240GB partition for spool, if they made ultrafast 1GB hard disks (Solid State Disks would be nice but very pricey), that would work best for spool. The case that was bought for me had room for only 9 drives and 7 were a SATA Hotswap chassis, so I made what I felt would hold the best value. I now have more than enough storage for mail, so I can be less limiting on my users, and I have more than reasonable performance.
As for my partitions: Spool 3GB Logs 60GB MailStore 607GB Maybe I could have come up with a better layout, but it's done now, and next time I rebuild the mail server will be when this one can't take the load, which should be nearly double the volume, and at our current growth, will be a long while. It works for you, but in general, better would be mirroring RAID1, and adding RAID0 if more space is needed. How have you partitioned/allocated the RAID to spool, logs, mailboxes?
