I did this years ago on a MailSite mail server, it was an ISP's mail server.
We were looking for accounts that had a lot of space used up and we concluded that since some accounts were over 250mb they probably didn't use it any more. We did a dir listing of all accounts, imported that into a spread sheet, and manually looked in each persons account to see if there was a forward and last login. If it had been over a year and no forward, Delete. The rest were sent an e-mail asking them to respond by a certain date (I think we used two months), if they didn't reply, we locked their account, waited another month, then deleted those. The ones that replied we just asked them to clean up the mail box nicely, and explained to them it was to enhance system performance, and they weren't really paying for the space anyway so we had the right to delete mail at random. Most of the users were great full we did it that way, because it meant they got the pick and chose instead of us doing a delete if msg is more then 1 yr old. Hope that helps. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Langston, Cale Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2004 9:47 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [IMail Forum] Account Audit What is the quickest and easiest way to do an account audit? I recently took over the IMail system and in the past 4 years that the system has been online the previous admin told me there was never an audit performed on the server. The server I administer is for Law Enforcement Officials throughout the state to have a medium in which to communicate. We offer this as a free service. Most of the time a Law Enforcement (county or state) agency will request an email account for someone. But at a point in the future that individual will leave the agency and the agency will never contact me, or even know the person who left had an active email account. I can't find a definite way of doing a successful audit. I tried all sorts of stuff like "last login" but that doesn't show folks who have a forwarder in their mailbox. I'm tried comparing that list to the individuals who have forward.ima in their directory but that is not conclusive since I have several users who POP in and/or use the web interface. So how do I do it? How do I perform an audit on all the accounts on my IMail server that is accurate? I don't mind running 3 or 4 reports, then comparing those reports but I'm uncertain as of now what exactly needs to be done since everything I try seems to have an exception to the rule.
