Servers Alive has an extremely inexpensive system with some free com
objects to monitor, among other things, a looped email process. It
sends an email, then receives the email and reports to you if it takes
longer than x seconds. They also now have com objects for directory
size and number of items in a directory. These can be valuable tools
for monitoring mail infrastructures, mail queue, etc.

Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] SMTP Service Stops Processing
Jeff,
We have experienced the same situation under 7.15. No errors at all to
include nothing in the event viewer or Dr. Watson. We opened a support
ticket with IPSwitch, but we never had anything to go on. They advised
us
to upgrade to 8.x and see if that helped. We did upgrade our backup
server
to 8.x which introduced a whole set of different problems so we kept the
primary on 7.15 and wrote some monitoring code (windows service) to keep
an
eye on the queue for this issue. If your interested in our queue
monitoring
application (QueueMon) you can check it out at
http://www.invariantsystems.com.
Regards,
Darrell
