What is the advantage to putting the IMail spool directory on a separate partition on the same physical drive?
A smaller partition with almost no permanent files (if cleaned/purged correctly), faster to defrag the partition
Wouldn't the performance be the same as having the spool dir on the C: or system partition?
no, 10's of 1000's of files in a the spool/ partition increases fragmentation (decreases access speed), increases defrag time.
Even with spool in its own partition, spooling will have to compete for disk access with the other maybe huge partitions which are maybe badly fragmented. the disk channel will be congested.
If you're really concerned, buy a Promise Ultra ATA133 controller (no mirroring) or equivalent, an ata100/133 7200 RPM disk with 8+ MB cache, and dedicate both to spooling. For under $150 and a hour's work, it'll make your $2000 server run a lot better, a lot longer, a lot easier to maintain.
